Who Keeps the Littlest Christmas Tree Lit? Sandwich's December, Volunteer by Volunteer

The first year the Sandwich FUNdation ran the lighting, a group of "tree elves" put on scuba gear and anchored a small donated evergreen in Shawme Pond. After that, people started gathering by the Dexter Grist Mill to watch it light up. CapeNews reported that the tree came from Scenic Roots, Café Chew served hot cider, and state Representative Steven G. Xiarhos read Thornton W. Burgess' "The Littlest Christmas Tree" aloud.

The tree comes back on Sunday, November 29, 2026, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Its history explains how Sandwich's whole holiday season works: small groups pass traditions to each other, and the newest group is now adding events of its own.

The Tree Has Changed Hands More Than Once

The lighting has had more than one host. A few years ago, the Sandwich Mothers Club ran it for the first time. CapeNews described how club members proposed expanding the event and worked with the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion to do it.

Later, the Sandwich FUNdation took the lead, working with a Littlest Christmas Tree Steering Committee. The FUNdation is a nonprofit run by local mothers. "We want to do fun things for the kids in our town. Taking on the Littlest Christmas Tree just felt like a natural progression of that," FUNdation member Antonia L. Solitro told CapeNews.

At that first lighting, the group also gave out 13 grants totaling $12,350, chosen from 30 applicants. The recipients show how far the group's reach goes past one evening on the pond:

  • The Sandwich Glass Museum, for a new kids' space
  • The Forestdale Church, to update its community play space
  • The Sandwich Recreation Department, for the 2025 Fall Festival
  • The Center For Active Living, for volleyball equipment and clinics

So the group lighting the tree also helps pay for things at the institutions that host the rest of the season. That connection runs through the rest of the calendar.

What the Afternoon at the Grist Mill Looks Like

The FUNdation's 2026 listing says only that more details are coming. Last year's program is a good guide to the format. As CapeNews laid out, the 2025 event started at 3 p.m. at 2 Water Street. Performances were directed by Savanna Vaughn, with dances by Align Dance Training and Sandwich Dance Academy and Christmas songs by the Forestdale Winter Chorus. Representative Xiarhos read the Burgess story at 4:15 p.m., and then a Sandwich resident lit the tree.

The 2025 event was free, held rain, snow or shine, and collected toilet paper for the Sandwich Food Pantry. That rule may change for 2026, so check the FUNdation's events page before you go. The Thornton W. Burgess Society lists "The Littlest Christmas Tree" among Burgess' works.

Two Days Earlier, Grove Street Starts Selling Timed Tickets

Two days before the tree lighting, on Friday, November 27, Heritage Museums & Gardens at 67 Grove Street opens Gardens Aglow. That puts the season's biggest ticketed event and its smallest free one on the same weekend.

Gardens Aglow runs 25 nights: November 27-29, December 2-6, December 8-13, December 15-23 and December 26-27. Hours are 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., with last entry at 8:00. Tickets come in three entry windows: 4:30-5:30, 5:45-6:45 and 6:45-7:45 p.m. The grounds include lighted gardens and tunnels, marshmallow roasting, a model train, and Santa in a 1913 Ford Model T. The 1908 Looff carousel runs too.

Buying ahead makes a real difference in price:

Ticket Non-member adult Non-member youth, 3-17 Member adult Member youth
Advance timed ticket $30 $20 $28 $18
Day-of, if available $60 $40 $56 $36

Day-of tickets cost twice the advance price, and Heritage says walk-up sales are not guaranteed. Under the Gardens Aglow ticketing policy, tickets are non-refundable, including for weather, unless the event is canceled for safety. Children 2 and under are free but still need a reserved ticket.

There are two add-ons. The Santa VIP Experience is $59 per person and runs from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. before every scheduled night except December 26 and 27. On those two nights, Avant Glow takes its place: early entry and an après-ski-style lounge in the Auto Gallery, $75 per person.

Glass Got the Season Started Early

Two weeks before either of those, the Sandwich Glass Museum opens Glassblowers' Christmas. The opening party is Friday, November 13, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. It also opens the museum's new winter exhibition, "This is what it looks like: Robert Harmon, Jr. and Experimental Images on Glass." The museum serves light refreshments and asks guests to RSVP through a form on its Glassblowers' Christmas page. The museum's calendar calls it the 17th annual Glassblower's Christmas Tree Unveiling.

Glass also started one of the town's most visible holiday traditions. The Sandwich Giants are the large lighted metal figures that appear around town each December. CapeNews traced them back to one sculpture: a man blowing a glass bubble, made in 1998 by Michael J. Magyar, who has a glass studio on Route 6A and trained as a sculptor.

The Giants follow the same model as the pond tree. Businesses and homeowners commission them, Magyar builds them, and each owner handles the lighting. Writing at the Giants' 25-year mark, the same CapeNews piece counted more than 77 across Sandwich. The Chamber's Holly Days guidebook has turned them into a scavenger hunt for people driving around town looking for them all. Dozens of separate owners each keep one figure lit, and together they make a townwide display.

December Fills In Around the Same Names

After the tree lighting, the calendar picks up again with events from the same groups. Here is what has a 2026 date so far:

  1. Saturday, December 12, 10:00-11:15 a.m. Gingerbread Storytime and Cookie Decorating at the Sandwich Public Library, 142 Main Street. Registration is required.
  2. Sunday, December 13, 9:00 a.m. The 1st Annual Jingle Jog, a 5K fun run for runners, walkers and families, starting from the Town Neck Beach parking lot at 151 Wood Avenue. The FUNdation runs it with the Sandwich Recreation Department.

The Jingle Jog is the new piece. Having taken over a tradition CapeNews describes as part of Sandwich's long history, the FUNdation is adding one of its own, with sign-up details on its event page.

The Sandwich Chamber of Commerce's 2026 Holly Days promises three weeks of shopping, carol singing, concerts, Santa visits, a gingerbread contest, the Jingle Jog and a village stroll. Locations and times are still being added. Until they're posted, last year's schedule is the best guide. In 2025, the Sandwich Village Stroll ran Sunday, December 7, from noon to 5 p.m. on Main Street, Jarves Street and Route 6A, and the Santa parade and Glass Town Tree lighting followed at 5:00. That same week, CapeNews listed the Community Carol Sing for Friday, December 5, at 7 p.m., starting on the steps of First Church of Christ with the Glass Town Carolers. Participating shops included Thatcher Ellery, Wave Cape Cod, Sandwich Antiques, the Dan'l Webster Inn Gift Shop, and Beth's Bakery and Café.

If the 2026 schedule follows that pattern, the Stroll will land on the first full weekend of December, between the opening of Gardens Aglow and the Jingle Jog. The Chamber is at 520 Route 130, and its Holly Days page is where the confirmed dates will go up.

Sandwich's December depends on people who show up to keep these traditions going: the divers who anchor the tree, the owners who light their Giants, the shops that stay open late for the Stroll.
