From Monday, October 5 through Monday, October 12, the northbound lane of Route 130 between Cotuit Road and Lake Avenue is closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for milling and paving. That's the lane carrying traffic toward Sandwich. Mashpee posted the notice on September 29. The work is part of the town's Phase 2 Collection System Contract 5, and its traffic plan sends every northbound car onto Cotuit Road.
For Forestdale, that means a week where Route 130 matters less than the two roads branching off it. Cotuit Road takes the detour traffic. Quaker Meetinghouse Road has most of the village's October events. Both were busy before the paving started.
What the Closure Actually Changes
The traffic management plan is dated September 25 and is short. It sets four rules for anyone driving through the work zone:
- All northbound traffic on Main Street, which is Route 130, is detoured onto Cotuit Road.
- The southbound lane stays open.
- Drivers coming onto Main Street from South Sandwich Road have to turn left.
- The southbound lane is moved over into the northbound lane so crews can mill and pave.
So if you're heading south toward Mashpee, you can still drive the road, just in a shifted lane. The detour is for trips home from the south during work hours. The left-turn rule at South Sandwich Road also matters, because that road leads to one of Forestdale's best fall walks, covered below.
The work runs on a daily window. Once crews stop at 5 p.m., the restriction lifts until 7 the next morning. The notice gives the schedule but doesn't say whether the job will finish on time, so October 12 is the planned end date, not a guaranteed one.

Cotuit Road Becomes the Main Road for a Week
The detour puts more cars on a road that already has a fair amount of local business. Marshland Too is at 315 Cotuit Road and takes online pickup orders. Its ordering page lists daily hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., but the page has no date, so call ahead before you plan a pickup around it.
Cotuit Road is also the way to Lowell Holly. The Trustees' directions say to take Route 130 south, turn left onto Cotuit Road and go 3.4 miles, then turn right onto South Sandwich Road. The reservation covers 135 acres. It's named for its donor, Abbot Lawrence Lowell, and for its roughly 250 native American holly trees. Holly grows wild only along the New England coast. Wilfred Wheeler Sr., a former Massachusetts Secretary of Agriculture, later planted 50 more varieties. Carriage roads follow the shores of Mashpee and Wakeby Ponds through beech woods. Admission is free, the reservation is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and dog walking is on the list of allowed activities.
The catch in October is parking. The lot most summer visitors know isn't open now.
| Seasonal lot | Year-round lot | |
|---|---|---|
| Open | Memorial Day to Labor Day, Wed.–Sun., 9 a.m.–5 p.m. | Year-round |
| Spaces | About 20 | About 6 |
| Location | Unmarked road off South Sandwich Road, about 0.7 mile in | On the right, about 0.6 mile down South Sandwich Road |
| Pond access | Close to Mashpee-Wakeby Pond | Much farther, along a winding trail |
Since Labor Day has passed, the six-car lot is the only way in. The Trustees say the pond is "much further away along a circuitous trail" from that lot. A fall visit means a longer walk through the woods before you reach the water, and on a weekend the six spaces can fill up quickly. When you leave, the detour rules still apply. You turn left from South Sandwich Road onto Route 130, and if you're heading north before 5 p.m., you'll go back by way of Cotuit Road.
Quaker Meetinghouse Road Has the Calendar
Most of Forestdale's events this month are on Quaker Meetinghouse Road, not along Route 130.
Oak Crest Cove, at number 34, is a town-owned recreation area by Peters Pond. The Sandwich Garden Club looks after a pollinator garden there, and its page posted a Summer 2026 update. This Friday morning it's the starting point for Forestdale School's Walk, Ride or Roll to School. Families arrive at the lower beach parking lot at 7:45 a.m. and leave together at 8:00. Every child needs an adult along, every participant gets a prize, and the rain date is October 14. Sandwich Recreation, the Sandwich Police Department and the Sandwich Fire Department are running the event with the school. It goes through the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School program, which is free, federally funded and run by MassDOT.
The walk is one piece of Pedestrian Safety Month, which the Town Manager's office announced on October 1 as part of the town's Slow Down – In Our Town campaign with the Sandwich Bikeways and Pedestrian Committee. The town has also been promoting the recently finished Service Road Shared-Use Path and a proposed extension to the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway. The town's driver tips this month include slowing down near schools and stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks, which Massachusetts law requires. The Friday walk falls inside the paving window, so the morning drop-off is in the same week that northbound traffic is moved onto a side road.
Oak Crest Cove is busy on Monday evenings too. Sandwich Recreation runs a beginner ballroom class there from 6 to 6:45 p.m., October 5 through 26, with a second session November 2 through 23. You have to register in advance, as a couple. One Recreation facility page still says the lodge is closed and shows an old COVID-era reservation warning. The current program listing has registration open for these dates, so go by the program page.
Farther along the road, the Sandwich Center for Active Living at 70 Quaker Meeting House Road hosts a community event on substance-use prevention, education and family resources on October 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Hours After 5 p.m. Are Normal
Because the closure ends at 5 p.m., Route 130 is back to two-way traffic for the evening, and Forestdale's one recently confirmed Route 130 food stop stays open later than that.
Jack in the Beanstalk, at 286 Route 130, is a deli, gourmet grocery, bakery and gift basket shop. The business dates back to 1978 and opened its Forestdale location more recently. Its hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, and an October 2 post says the deli counter closes at 6 p.m. An October 1 post announced fresh apple-cider donuts. On weekdays this week, that leaves about two hours after the crews stop when you can drive up Route 130 normally, stop for groceries and donuts, and still make the deli counter.
The fall season also has an end date at Peters Pond. Sun Retreats Peters Pond, the resort by the pond with its own restaurant and country store, ends its 2026 season on October 31. It's for resort guests. Visitors have to register and can only be on the property with a guest.
Wednesday's Meeting Is About the Water Under All of It
The other date on this week's calendar takes place in Bourne. The subject is the groundwater under the entire Cape.
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is reviewing a proposed machine-gun range at Camp Edwards on Joint Base Cape Cod. Gov. Maura Healey shelved the project in September 2024. A National Academies committee holds an open meeting on Wednesday, October 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bog Tavern at Brookside Golf Club, 11 Brigadoone Road. You can attend in person or online, and public comment runs from 2 to 3:30 p.m. A closed meeting and a private tour of the range area follow on October 8.
The Cape Cod Times reports that the committee will look at the history of soil and groundwater contamination at Camp Edwards, at monitoring and mitigation plans for range contaminants, and at what research and modeling would be needed to make sure small-arms training poses no significant risk to the aquifer. According to the EPA, the Cape Cod Aquifer was designated in 1982 as the sole or principal source of the Cape's drinking water. The Army National Guard says the range is needed to meet updated Army qualification standards and that no other site in the state is suitable. This is the committee's second information-gathering session, and the online option means you can listen to the public comment period without driving to Bourne.
The paving is scheduled to finish on October 12, and Mashpee's notice is the place to check if that date moves. After the detour ends, Lowell Holly's six-car lot stays open year-round, and the Monday ballroom class at Oak Crest Cove continues through November 23.
